How to Build a Monthly Giving Program That Lasts
Share
A recurring-giving program is not just a recurring payment button. The real work is giving supporters a reason to stay connected month after month.
Start with a specific invitation
Choose a clear purpose, such as underwriting ongoing program costs. Translate that purpose into language a prospective donor can understand without a budget spreadsheet. Show how monthly gifts support continuity, not just a one-time emergency.
Make joining easy
Keep the donation process simple. Explain that gifts recur, offer a choice of amounts, and ensure donors can update their giving. Test the full process before inviting supporters.
Plan stewardship before launch
Decide who sends acknowledgments, how you will provide updates, and when you'll thank recurring donors in a personal way. A donor who gives twelve times a year deserves more than twelve automated receipts.
Watch the right numbers
Track active monthly donors, total monthly commitments, retention, and new enrollments. Don't focus only on signup numbers. Keep improving the program based on the relationships you are building.
Put it into practice
Start by writing a one-paragraph monthly-giving invitation and a three-month donor communication plan.
